I remember one really cold night in December 2015 when I was scrolling through tumblr as one does and stumbled upon a gifset or a trailer for a film starring Lily Collins and Sam Claflin. Two of my favorites! How could I not watch it?
I watched the trailer and the story swallowed me whole. I immediately started browsing to find more information about this film and the whole story and I started counting down the days till it’s premiere.
Naturally, that same weekend I started reading the book that the film was based on and I read it that weekend.
As expected, there are differences in the stories and in my opinion, the film has a happier ending than that of the book but both are very much worth checking out.
To sum up the story: Rosie and Alex grow up together, they are best friends but life insists on keeping them apart. Rosie wants to move with Alex to the States when college rolls around but she gets pregnant (not with Alex’s child as they are not romantically involved) and she keeps it a secret from Alex, thinking that she would give the baby up for adopting and join Alex the following year. She has her baby and falls in love with her, so she keeps her. Alex finds out, then a bunch of weird crazy things happen that keep them apart but they eventually end up together. That eventually that I just mentioned happens way later in the book than it does in the film.
Anyway, both are exceptionally well written, the story is one of the few romantic ones that I enjoy and I wholeheartedly recommend them. The book is written in a cute way, the story tucked between the correspondence between Alex and Rosie, and the film is funny and heartbreaking at the same time.
Please, please check them out. You will not regret it. Here is the trailer for the film.
My rating: 5/5 stars
A quote: “You deserve someone who loves you with every single beat of his heart, someone who thinks about you constantly, someone who spends every minute of every day just wondering what you’re doing, where you are, who you’re with, and if you’re OK. You need someone who can help you reach your dreams and protect you from your fears. You need someone who will treat you with respect, love every part of you, especially your flaws. You should be with someone who could make you happy, really happy, dancing on air happy.”
