I watched this film just recently and it was mainly due to the cast. I think I saw Sam Claflin promote the film a while ago on his Instagram account and I decided that I would add it to my to-watch list and eventually just get around to watch it. Well, let me tell you – going in not knowing anything about the story literally kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire film.
Based on a true story of survival, Adrift depicts the heartbreaking story of Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp. They are a young couple who meets on the island of Tahiti, and eventually fall in love. (That’s underselling the story, truthfully). Richard accepts this job to sail and deliver a yacht to San Diego but they get caught up in a huge storm in the Pacific ocean (turns out to be a hurricane) and Tami ends up alone on the boat after Richard is swept away by the storm. She starts hallucinating and hallucinating her lover keeps her going and she navigates the yacht towards Hawaii instead of the original destination of San Diego.
The film is beautifully done – it made me second-guess the story (in a good way) to the point of thinking – is she really doing this, is this really happening, or is it just in her head. Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin are in the roles of Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp and while I was completely unfamiliar with the story, I must say that they did a wonderful job of telling that story.
I would rate this film at a 4/5 stars and I would recommend it to anyone who loves films based on real-life stories.
